Problem:

A construction company that inspects pipes in roadways uses automated video systems to identify issues. The video is processed through software that analyzes the inspection data. However, the system cannot handle more than one video at a time, and the reports produced are inadequate, lacking the necessary information. Additional time is required to modify the reports and rerun them. Some reports can be nearly a hundred pages. It can take anywhere from 4 hours to a full day to process one video.

Solution:

I was given a comprehensive overview of the process and shown each step, as well as the software used to process the video. I was able to extract the necessary data from that system and build an interface that read the video metadata and compiled the reports, complete with all the required information. Multiple crews turned in terabytes of data daily; they are now able to plug in multiple USB drives and process them simultaneously. It takes less than 15 minutes to process each.

Bridging A Gap

Problem:

Manufacturing company used engineering software with limited compatibility with the CNC machine it downloaded instructions to, which meant they couldn’t produce a barcode or QR code for their material they were cutting.

Solution:

We examined the process and the two software systems to see if I could find a loop in the machine output that would help identify the function and trigger a label to print when a specific task occurred. The system could also accept input from a scanner to record the material moving through the line.

Problem:

The client’s bidding process was complex, and they were unable to find a suitable software system to manage their process effectively.

Solution:

We reviewed the current process and discussed the desired functionality of the new system. I built the system with their input to ensure it worked intuitively and was easy to maintain and use. The bid tool would also interface with their accounting system to set up new jobs as they were awarded. The new system saves them hours per bid since the data is stored in one system and is easy to navigate.

Problem:

A construction client had to complete a specialized labor utilization report documenting the states where they performed work. The form could only be filled out manually and took about an hour to prepare reports, plus another half hour per job to complete the form. Additional information also had to be tracked.

Solution:

Create a custom interface to extract the necessary information from the payroll and accounting system once the user inputs the current pay period, then generate the form tailored to each state’s format. The necessary information was recorded automatically to keep track of the number of payrolls and a log of when they were run. Prior reports could be re-run as needed. The entire process was completed in less than half an hour.
